Virginia’s Save Our Streams is a program that belongs to the Izaak Walton League of America. The League takes a common-sense approach toward protecting our country’s natural heritage and improving outdoor recreation opportunities for all Americans.
What is Save Our Streams?
As a Virginian, we have the right to know whether our water is clean and safe for swimming, fishing, playing, and drinking. This program helps get youth and the community engaged in our streams.
Through various school programs and workshops, Save Our Streams informs people and gets them involved with water quality. By identifying which macroinvertebrates live in a local stream, volunteers can calculate a stream health score.
Having information from these streams can allow us to identify pollution problems, determine how to restore streams, and assess the success of restoration efforts.
Our goal is to monitor water quality at 100,00 more stream sites nationwide by 2022 and improve water quality across the country. Ready to take the challenge? Find out how you can help protect America’s waterways.
